Satellite Lab’s FlightLight

FlightLight is a packaged version of Satellite Lab’s PlateLight technology. A solution for filming a character in an environment of changing and/or moving light.

This problem has vexed the world of Film and TV for decades: How do you convincingly bring the audience along with their heroes as they plummet off a building, a plane, fly in corkscrews in an aerial dogfight, or just drive their car into a dark tunnel?

With FlightLight, you have the freedom to retain 100% of the actor’s performance and still relight the actor accurately to reflect the dynamic environment you’re putting them in.

FlightLight
overview

FlightLight is built upon our proprietary PlateLight technology—an approach to filmmaking that enables live-action takes with multiple lighting setups at the same time. In post we then choose which of those lighting setups we wish to use.

In essence, this allows us to relight the scene after we have filmed it.

Our patented technologies have been battle-tested in dozens of commercials, event installations, and the AAA blockbusters from Marvel Studio’s Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Why FlightLight?

Six different lighting moments shot all at once

The most effective solutions currently available to an industry creative require full CG versions of the heroes to be created to allow the interactive lighting on the actor to match the dynamic environment they’re moving through.

One can try to capture these moments when shooting the actors, but as anyone who has worked in post-production can tell you, it’s rare that the on-set timing truly matches the intent once you’re in the edit suite.

FlightLight allows you to make these key moments truly resonate with the audience.

Say you want to introduce a key lighting event to a glint in an actor’s eye or an exact musical cue. In Editorial, a production can spend weeks and weeks tweaking a cut, sound design, and VFX to make the impact the largest possible on the audience.

How it
works

To film with FlightLight the following is required: a studio (yours or ours), a small number of reccomended lights (yours or ours), a camera, and Satellite Lab’s patented synchronization technology.

An ‘off-the-shelf’ suggested basic configuration is available for simplicity of show bidding. Still, the technology is highly scalable and there’s nothing more the Satellite Lab team like doing than getting into the creative and technical details with Director, Cinematographer, and Producer to make sure you walk away with both beautiful footage in-camera, and the ability to create the most dynamic sequence possible in Post.

FlightLight lighting is flicker-free for talent and crew on set and easily repositionable just like a regular film set. We work with a number of different types of industry standard light sources and cameras depending on the creative and technical goals of the project.
